Pleasanton National Little League
Fan Talk: Umpiring in PNLL

May 25, 2005

Kevin and the PNLL BOD,

This is the first year that I have umpired for PNLL. After contacting Gerard Takiguci, he put me in touch with the different UIC's in District 57 (I went to the one week umpire school in 1999 with Gerard). I live in San Jose but work in Pleasanton and wanted to umpire games during the week (it's too difficult to get down to District 12 in time to umpire games there). So based on field proximity (and working here with Jon Ferrel) I hooked up with Dennis Rashe and got myself scheduled for some games.

I would like you to know that I have enjoyed working for PNLL. Not knowing the different leagues in District 57, one of my concerns was umpiring for a league that didn't show any respect to the umpires from the coaches, players, or fans (or even worse, a lack of support from the BOD). That has not been my experience umpiring in PNLL. The coaches, players, and the fans have all held themselves to a high standard with respect to the way they work with the umpires. They have treated me and those I have worked with, as people, capable of making a mistake, but working very hard to give them the best game possible. That respect isn't always the case with other leagues.

So I write this to let you know that I feel it is a reflection of your and Dennis's hard work in creating an environment at PNLL where the baseball games can be fun for everyone (including the umpires). Kudos to you all.

Good luck to PNLL at tournament time.

Thank you for the opportunity to work in your league.

Take care,

Larry Gomez
